15mm Crimean Tartars, Late 17th Century

The Crimean Khanate remained, by the late seventeenth century, the most formidable ally the Ottoman Sultanate had. By this period, armour had been dropped by virtually all but the highest ranking warriors, and their immediate bodyguards. Surprisingly, by this late period, many Tartars from the Khanate actually no longer used bows, relying instead on spears with bone tips. These warriors were called Oghlan, and were the inspiration for later Uhlan lancer cavalry. Oghlans also wore a small wing on their backs. Crimean Tartar nobles were no longer armoured but were double-armed with a proper lance and a bow. Of course, many Tartar horsemen continued to be equipped and to fight as Mongol light horse archers from preceding centuries.

By this period, the Khanate had adopted infantry with firearms -- "Segbans" -- who rode nags into battle along with the cavalry, and dismounted to shoot in close support of them. As such they were similar to dragoons, and we have added a nag and horse-holder with the set. .
